Navigating divorce is never simple. But in an age increasingly dominated by digital noise, modern co-parenting faces unprecedented challenges. As September approaches, marking the start of a busy new school year, separated parents find themselves under heightened emotional and organizational strain.

We sat down with Storm Joye, co-founder of the Belgian startup Cofamly, to discuss his personal journey growing up in a split home, why modern societal shifts are making co-parenting harder, and how technology can be redesigned to restore structure, privacy, and peace for children.

"As a kid, custody handovers felt like playing a 50-50 roulette game with your emotional state. With Cofamly, our aim is to eliminate that roulette wheel. By providing clear structure, transparent logs, and predictability, we ensure the child isn't burdened by adult friction." - Storm Joye, founder of Cofamly

Cofamly illustrates why human-centric startups are so vital today: they tackle systemic everyday problems, such as communication breakdowns, custody scheduling, and shared financial tracking, with empathy rather than purely commercial motives.

High-pressure periods

The necessity of such tools becomes especially noticeable during major life transitions or busy periods. September marks one of the most vulnerable times for separated households. Following summer holidays, divorce filings often surge, coinciding with a heavy wave of school-related expenses, logistics, and scheduling demands.

During these high-stress moments, traditional instant messaging platforms can frequently cause conflict through quick, emotional reactions. CoFamily reimagines digital communication by requiring all messages, appointments, and financial items to be attached directly to a specific child, purposefully re-anchoring parents around their children's best interests.

“There are so many things that need to be planned in a separation: from picking kids up after sports to coordinating school activities. If parents can point to communication in general as the “main issue”, they will. But when they have to choose the single biggest friction point, they choose planning. Next is finances. And then communicating in a structured way without endless bickering. Around those three pillars, parents experience immense pain, and it happens on a daily basis. We’re here to fix that.” - Storm Joye

With Cofamly, our aim is to eliminate that roulette wheel. By providing clear structure, transparent logs, and predictability, we ensure the child isn't burdened by adult friction."

Countering modern individualism

Beyond immediate logistics, Cofamly’s mission reflects a broader critique of contemporary culture. Modern society, influenced by social media and individualistic trends, increasingly pushes people toward self-centeredness and isolation. When relationships face hardship, falling into echo chambers often replaces collaborative problem-solving. It’s exactly that dynamic which Joye compares to the social fragmentation observed in classic behavioral studies.

To counter this isolation, Cofamly expands beyond a simple app into a comprehensive ecosystem. They support parents through four key phases: from initial emotional separation and legal arrangements to daily operational co-parenting, and embracing modern blended family dynamics. In this way, the app proves how technology, when guided by genuine purpose, can rebuild community in a way traditional messaging channels can’t.
